USGBC-ECBayOakland Community College Partnership

Posted

ECBayOakland’s comprehensive sustainability initiative with the Peralta Community College District (PCCD) leaped forward with a new partnership with US Green Building Council (USGBC), ECC Board member.  Laney College president, Dr. Webb, signed up her management team, faculty and students to USGBC’s Green Schools program.  The program offers free institutional and student membership in USGBC, participation in USGBC conferences and special meetings, free LEED Green Associate certification training curricula and materials, among other benefits. The opportunities were not lost on the faculty or student community.  The kick-off student introduction meeting was a huge success! Over 40 students signed up for the LEED certification training and joined the newly formed student sustainability club.  The professional designation boosts student resumes and increases their competitiveness in the green/energy sector and their prospects to intern on the PCCD’s sustainability projects.   Marisol Zavala Suarez, Laney student, is the ambassador for the USGBC student charter.  Laney’s CTE (Career Technical Education) faculty, Kelle McMahon and John Shurtz, are helping to establish the program at Laney, and will roll it out across the other campuses in the fall semester.  They both have their LEED AP certification and recognize how invaluable.  PCCD goal is 200 students and faculty receiving LEED Green  Associate certification over the next two years.  We know they can do it!
